New fire protection spill pallet for sprinkler systems in accordance with VdS 3859
With a new fire protection spill pallet for IBCs, DENIOS offers a targeted solution for companies that store flammable hazardous materials in production areas and use sprinkler systems in accordance with VdS 3859. The design is precisely tailored to the requirements of VdS information sheet 3859 – customers receive a compliant, practical and particularly economical product. Find out more!
Who is the new fire protection spill pallet relevant for?
The new fire protection spill pallet is aimed at all companies that store flammable hazardous substances in IBCs within their production areas and also use sprinkler systems in accordance with VdS 3859. VdS information sheet 3859 describes the design of sprinkler systems for the protection of flammable liquids and is considered binding if this has been contractually agreed with the property insurer. A glance at the insurance documents can quickly provide clarity here.
Section K.3.4 of VdS 3859 regulates the protective measures that must be taken for individual containers in production areas that are protected at least in accordance with OH 3. If more than 200 litres of flammable liquids are present in close proximity (i.e. with less than 5 m between the individual containers) – which is the case with a 1,000-litre IBC – special requirements apply to the spill pallets on which the containers are stored. A standard collection tray is not sufficient here, as VdS 3859 requires special design features that classic models do not meet.
What is VdS?
VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH is a subsidiary of the German Insurance Association (GDV). As a German company, many of our products are in accordance with the high expectations of German certifications and legislation. It draws up recognised guidelines and information sheets governing the planning, construction and operation of sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems and security products, for example. VdS information sheets such as VdS 3859 are considered to be the recognised state of the art and often serve as the basis for insurance contracts.
Developed to meet the requirements of VdS 3859: the new fire protection spill pallet from DENIOS
With its new fire protection spill pallet, DENIOS has responded specifically to the requirements of VdS 3859 and increasing demand from the market. The design is based on consistent implementation of the VdS specifications and at the same time offers a high degree of user-friendliness and cost-effectiveness. The most important features at a glance:
Extended collection volume for firefighting water
In the event of a fire, it is not only the leakage of hazardous materials that must be taken into account – the extinguishing water from the sprinkler system must also be safely collected. VdS 3859 therefore requires 1.4 times the storage volume as the minimum collection volume. The new spill pallet meets this requirement with a total volume of 1,400 litres – sufficient for a 1,000-litre IBC plus 400 litres of extinguishing water, which is a realistic amount for around 20 minutes of sprinkler operation. Important for the user: the maximum storage quantity remains at 1,000 litres – the reserve is intended exclusively for the additional extinguishing water.
Side enclosure avoids minimum distances
According to VdS 3859, all containers must maintain a distance of 60 cm from the edge of the tray without additional safety measures – a rather impractical requirement in practice. Instead, the new DENIOS fire protection spill pallet meets the conditions for an exemption within VdS 3859: it has non-combustible side walls and a closed front with a hinged door, so that liquids cannot escape in the event of a leak. The distance requirement is no longer applicable – safety remains.
Safety features for sealing walls and doors
The side walls of the fire protection spill pallet are designed so that any escaping liquids are directed into the interior. For additional safety, the joints are reliably sealed with a silicone strip. The door at the front is the same height as the side walls, providing all-round protection against external influences such as damage or fire. The lower door edges and the front edge of the tray are bevelled inwards to safely direct liquids into the collection chamber – effective protection against uncontrolled leakage of extinguishing water and/or hazardous materials.
Simple and practical handling
The new fire protection spill pallet impresses not only with its protective function. During development, we also placed great emphasis on good handling characteristics: the fire protection tray is accessible from the front via the open hinged door and can be conveniently loaded using a forklift or pallet truck. For internal mobility, the tray can be moved flexibly using a forklift truck. In addition, the fire protection spill pallet is equipped with a modular grid, the front part of which can be removed to allow a filling area to be set up.
Functional and economical
Unlike comparable systems on the market, which are often equipped with cost-intensive additional features, DENIOS deliberately focuses on a needs- and cost-optimised solution. The spill pallet meets all the requirements of VdS 3859 – without unnecessary complexity, but with full practicality.
