How to correctly plan a Hazardous Material Storage
When planning a room system, there are many points that play an important role: Which sets of rules must be included? Which materials should be stored? Do certain storage temperatures have to be maintained for the media? What are the operational conditions like? Experience has shown that a lot can go wrong during planning, which under certain circumstances not only causes additional costs but also security deficiencies. In the following we have put together a few of the most important questions to ask yourself when planning a room system.
Depending on the properties and the amount of the hazardous materials being stored, building regulations for storage apply. In the case of acids or alkalis, special PE liners, for example, must be provided in the spill pallet. For flammable media, legal fire protection regulations must also be observed. If there is an explosive atmosphere, the ATEX Directive 2014/34 / EU must be observed. If different media are being stored, the assembly instructions must be observed.
How hazardous is the media being stored?
The safety data sheet or the packaging label will indicate how hazardous the media is and should be used to determine safe options for the aggregation of various hazardous substances in order to avoid an increase in risk. Depending on how hazardous the media is and the storage quantities of substances hazardous to water or the size of the system, spill pallets with the corresponding catchment volume and extinguishing water retention devices are required as water protection measures. What are the specifications in the safety data sheet?
In the safety data sheet you can usually find information for safe storage conditions. These include special requirements for storage rooms or containers (including retaining walls and ventilation), incompatible materials, storage conditions (temperature / air / moisture / light, etc.), special requirements for electrical systems and equipment, and measures against electrostatic charging.

Which container size should be stored in which quantity?
Depending on the size of the container, the storage type must be determined. How is the warehouse stocked with the containers / pallets?
The type of stocking (manual / wheelbarrow / pallet truck / forklift) determines, for example, whether a fork-lift is required or if a ramp needs to be installed.
Will the material be unloaded or transferred in the warehouse?
When draining and transferring hazardous substances, increased safety devices must be planned - especially if the storage medium is a flammable substance. Technical protective measures include the provision of technical ventilation, which ensures compliance with prescribed air exchange rate, exhaust air monitoring, fire and explosion protection measures, and the installation of equipotential grounding. For safe handling, appropriate equipment options are available, such as barrel pumps, funnels and taps. In the case of temperature-sensitive substances, technical equipment (heating / air-conditioning) must be provided to comply with the temperature limits. Depending on the application, our technical room systems have thermal insulation of ISO A or ISO B material.
Hazardous goods warehouses with thermal insulation are primarily used for the frost-free storage of temperature-sensitive substances. On request, the systems can be equipped with a higher heat output, cooling units or air conditioning systems. The proven design principle of the technical room systems is also continued with the insulated construction. The stable and welded steel frame construction is covered on all sides with special panels. Different insulation materials are used for the storage of water-polluting or flammable hazardous substances (mineral wool or PUR panels).
