Storage of solvents - taking into account fire and explosion protection

The Schunk Group specialises in the manufacture of carbon and graphite products. The employees are frequently in contact with cleaning agents containing solvents. DENIOS created a large-scale in-house solution that made storing the liquids just as possible as working directly on them.

Challenge and task

In the manufacture of carbon and graphite products, the Schunk Group uses resins that can only be thoroughly cleaned by solvents. In addition to health hazards, the use of solvents must always be expected to cause the spread of vapours and thus explosive mixtures with air. In order to avoid high handling and travel costs, it was decided to locate the production in a new hall in the immediate vicinity of the existing buildings.

The solution

Three DENIOS fire protection bearings form the heart of the new facility. In addition to being approved in accordance with the German Water Resources Act (WHG), these types fulfil an approved F 90 fire protection rating from the inside and outside. Exhaust air tables with front screens were used in the cleaning warehouse. The units are made of stainless steel to ensure good durability and easy cleaning. Employees are optimally protected by the targeted airflow. In the hazardous materials store for the solvents, there are three storage tanks with sediment separators in addition to circulation pumps for the washing tables. This allows the solvent used to remain in use for longer. The third warehouse also received a point extraction system; here the resins are mixed, stirred and filtered for use without endangering the employees. All three fire protection warehouses are permanently ventilated via a common explosion-proof fan with a 5-fold air exchange.

result and customer benefit

In close coordination with the Schunk Group, DENIOS engineers developed a complete solution that takes into account all requirements for fire and explosion protection in the storage of solvents, as well as personal protection in the handling of solvents. The installation of the systems at the customer's site was completed in one week using the "plug and store" construction method. The complete documentation with CE marking, ATEX conformity assessment, operating instructions, etc. was handed over to the customer directly after acceptance, so that the system could be put into operation immediately.
