Test bench for stationary energy storage

Voltavision GmbH from Bochum is an independent research and development service provider that operates test systems for the high-tech systems of the disciplines of electromobility and renewable energies. The size of the test specimens ranges from the lithium-ion battery for electrical appliances to "large" energy storage systems. For precisely these large-scale applications, Voltavision and DENIOS are working together to develop a climate container that is characterized by both its comfortable test chamber volume and the included fire protection.

The challenge and task

The energy transition requires a rethink - in many ways. More and more energy is being gained from renewable sources, e.g. from wind farms or solar systems. The energy is thus often generated in places and at times of the day, where no direct recycling can take place. This also means that the topic of electrical energy storage is becoming increasingly important. Extensive tests are required with regard to the effects of a wide range of environmental influences on the service life of the modules.

There are many recommendations from the trade association, but there are no laws or regulations in the true sense in which installers and operators could orient themselves. Security concepts are therefore based more on knowledge than standards.

On the basis of the risk assessment, the realization of a separate fire section by enclosing the test bench was absolutely necessary in this case. A fire protection cover was required, which withstood 90 minutes of internal or external fire stress. Standard climate chambers available on the market do not cover this requirement.

The solution

Voltavision and DENIOS are jointly developing an F90 climate container as a test bench for stationary energy storage systems. Here, particularly large batteries, within the possible test chamber volume of up to 30 m³, can be exposed to defined thermal and electrical conditions. Under standardized test conditions are here in a temperature range of - 20 ° C to + 60 ° C z. B. simulated artificial aging processes. The batteries are checked for their cycle life and calendar life. Also considered: a comprehensive security concept. The integration of appropriate sensors allows continuous room monitoring. Whether by gas detection or temperature sensor - prevention is important!

A pressure relief surface in the roof area allows a controlled pressure equalization in case of emergency. A high-performance, technical ventilation also ensures the dissipation of hazardous and possibly explosive gases. And should it come to the worst, contaminated cooling water collects in a drip tray. An acid-resistant, dissipative inliner provides additional safety. The drainage of the WHG tub is via a separate connection. The cooling water can be disposed of properly.

Result and customer benefits

An innovative and turnkey solution with consistently reproducible measurement results! And all without a separate climate chamber inside the test container!
